At TLC Dentistry, we believe that a well-informed patient has the best shot at being a healthy & happy patient. We wanted to seize this opportunity to discuss some common misconceptions about dental health, and help prevent serious dental issues now, and for years to come.
Brushing harder makes my teeth cleaner - False
Brushing harder, and using a hard bristled toothbrush, may damage your teeth. It can lead to loss of enamel, sensitivity, and recession of gum tissue. When it comes to tooth brushing, it comes down to technique, type of toothbrush, duration and frequency. Overall, it is recommended to brush for 2-minutes, 2 times per day, using gentle pressure. We love to use electric toothbrushes, but if you are using a manual be sure to use small circular motions. With an electric toothbrush you just need to slowly glide the brush head along the tooth surfaces and gumline.
"Diet" drinks are a safe choice for our teeth - False
Although there is no natural sugar, diet drinks still contain high levels of acid that lead to erosion of your teeth. It is also important to keep in mind the amount of time during the day your teeth are exposed to the acidic drinks. Sipping on drinks throughout the day increases the amount of time your mouth is in an acidic state. It’s best to drink acidic drinks in a short timeframe and mix in water during and after drinking acidic drinks, including coffee!
You only need to visit a dentist when you are having a problem - False
Oftentimes, by the time a significant problem occurs, the issue has become more serious. Many dental problems can be prevented or have a simpler, less invasive solution if caught early. Poor oral hygiene, infrequent check ups, failure to replace missing teeth, and other forms of neglect that lead to needing more extensive and pricy treatment. This goes for gum disease, cavities, and more.
Baby teeth are going to fall out anyways so they don't need regular check ups and maintenance - False
It’s been proven that poor oral health in children leads to dental pain, missing school, and overall poorer performance in school and other activities. Also, maintaining baby teeth until the time they are naturally meant to fall out is key in making sure the adult teeth can grow into the proper position.
Replacing missing teeth is cosmetic - False
Once a tooth is removed, it can lead to a cascade of effects in your mouth. This includes the shifting of teeth, inflammation of the gums, and chewing on one side of our mouth more than the other. Over time, eating on primarily one side not only affects those teeth more, but also affects our jaw joint over time.
